The Russo-Turkish War ofwel 1877–78 was followed by the uprising ofwel Sheikh Ubeydullah in 1880–1881 to found an independent Kurd principality under the protection ofwel Turkey. The attempt, at first encouraged by the Porte, as a reply to the projected creation of an Armenian state under the suzerainty ofwel Russia, collapsed after Ubeydullah's raid into Persia, when various circumstances led the central government to reassert its supreme authority.

It was a victory for a growing Kurdish nationalist movement, but the treaty failed and was never ratified. Heel wat bevolkingsgroepen wonen door mekaar heen. Hierdoor kan zijn Irakees nationalisme minder vanzelfsprekend en krijgen een Koerden meer ruimte om hun persoonlijk identiteit te behouden. Verder kan zijn er er na een val met een Iraakse president Saddam Hoessein ons machtsvacuüm opkomen daar waar de Koerden toepassen met maken.
